Description:An on site visit was made to Sterling Chemicals, Inc. (SIC-2869), Texas City, Texas for the purpose of determining employee exposure to acrylonitrile (107131) (AN) during the production of AN monomer which began at this site in 1952. Personal AN air samples have been collected since 1977. The highest exposures were noted in the AN Production and the Distribution Department, followed by certain technicians. Other groups with significant exposures included maintenance employees, quality analysis laboratory workers, and process technology workers. Engineers had the lowest exposure levels reported. Tasks which involved increased exposure included collecting AN samples, checking tank levels, breaking into lines, decontaminating equipment, and handling waste materials. The passage of the OSHA standard for exposure to AN had the greatest effect of any single factor on lessening the exposures and tightening the controls of this facility.
