Description:An in/depth industrial hygiene survey of exposures to phosphine (7803512) during the use of aluminum-phosphide (20859738) was conducted at Scoular Elevator (SIC-5153), Salina, Kansas, as part of a survey on exposure to grain fumigants. Area monitoring and breathing zone sampling for phosphine were conducted during the addition of aluminum-phosphide to grain during turning operations; source samples and peak personal exposures were also analyzed. Air temperatures during the survey ranged from 18 to 43 degrees-F. Personal exposures ranged from 0.04 to 0.21 parts per million (ppm) as geometric means, while the highest single shift personal exposure was 0.37ppm. The OSHA permissible exposure limit for phosphine was air from the bin headspace during filling with treated grain, filling and emptying of the phosphide pellet dispenser, and infiltration from the treated grain bin and from the pellet dispenser itself into adjacent air space. Relatively good dust control was indicated by the total dust samples collected during the survey. Measures recommended by the author include installation of local exhaust ventilation at the dispenser and the tripper car discharge chutes, labeling bins at top and bottom, further industrial hygiene studies, and the use of personal protective equipment during dispenser filling and emptying until exposures are reduced.
