  Industrial hygiene surveys were conducted in June and July, 1985, at H. Nagel and Son (SIC-5153), Cincinnati, Ohio to assess malathion (121755) and methoxychlor (72435) exposure during space treatment of the bin floor of the grain elevator, and to phosphine (7803512) during the treatment of incoming wheat prior to and during long term storage. Full shift, breathing zone sampling and area monitoring were conducted. Personal exposures to phosphine ranged from less than 0.06 parts per million (ppm) to 1.6ppm, more than five times the current OSHA permissible exposure limit of 0.3ppm. Significant sources of exposure at the grain elevator included the escape of contaminated air from headspaces of bins being filled with grain, and temporary storage of phosphide in the automatic dispenser holding vessel. The lack of local exhaust ventilation at the tripper chutes and dispenser, and the lack of general dilution ventilation contributed to the problem. Storage of increasing amounts of treated grain at the elevator did not result in an upward trend in concentrations in the bin floor area. Exposures to aerosols of malathion and methoxychlor during the weekend fogging of the bin floor were low, ranging from less than 0.50 microgram/cubic meters (microg/m3) to 9.3microg/m3. Analysis of settled dust indicated a widespread distribution of the pesticides in the elevator, persisting for several weeks after fumigation. The author recommends that additional local and dilution exhaust systems be installed and the respiratory protective program be reassessed. [Description provided by NIOSH]
