• Description:
  An industrial hygiene survey to evaluate the FMC Corporation Film and Packaging Division, Fredericksburg, Virginia, plant for use in the industrial hygiene phase of an industry wide study of mortality and reproductive health effects of carbon-disulfide (75150) has been conducted. The major product of this facility is cellophane (SIC- 3079) and the plant has a present rated capacity of 100 million pounds per year. Another byproduct, sodium-sulfate (7757826) is also recovered and marketed. The facility maintains its own medical and industrial hygiene programs. The company also has a formal safety program. Environmental monitoring of CS2 has been conducted by plant personnel since the beginning of operations. The plant at present makes only cellophane and does not have a comparable work force of employees in similar jobs not exposed to CS2. It is concluded that the site cannot be recommended for reproductive, mortality or cross sectional medical studies due to lack of a suitable control population; however, given the size and variation of its workforce, the site is considered suitable for inclusion in an industrial hygiene study.
