  Worker exposures to perchloroethylene (127184) were determined at Happy Cleaner Man Cleaners (SIC-7216) in New York, New York, on August 29, 1979. The survey was part of a NIOSH study of the health effects of occupational perchloroethylene exposure. The facility employed 15 workers. The company had no formal safety and industrial hygiene program. Air samples were collected using battery operated pumps and charcoal tubes. The time weighted average (TWA) concentrations ranged from 4.0 to 12.0 parts per million (ppm). Five minute peak exposures to perchloroethylene during clothing transfer ranged from 191 to 637 ppm, with one 15 minute peak exposure of 97ppm. The OSHA standard for an 8 hour TWA concentration is 100ppm, and 200ppm for ceiling concentrations. The OSHA standard dictates that perchloroethylene concentrations not exceed a maximum peak of 300ppm for 5 minutes in any 3 hour period. The author concludes that exposures to perchloroethylene at this company are generally within OSHA standards. He recommends the addition ventilation engineering controls as warranted, availability of respiratory protective equipment, use of protective clothing, worker education, and periodic leak inspection of storage containers and equipment.
