  Worker exposures to perchloroethylene (127184) (PCE) were determined at Peerless Cleaners (SIC-7216) in New York, New York, on August 30, 1979. THe survey was part of a NIOSH industrywide mortality and industrial hygiene study of dry cleaning workers. The company employed five workers, and had no formal safety or industrial hygiene program. First aid was provided by trained employees. During the 488 minutes of dry cleaning operations, time weighted average exposures for the dry cleaners were 8 parts per million (ppm) of PCE. PCE concentrations in the dry cleaning area and at the front counter were 0.7 and 0.3ppm, respectively. The PCE concentrations in the 5 minute peak samples collected during garment transfer were 68, 212, and 2.7ppm, and two 15 minute peak samples contained 13 and 263ppm of PCE. The OSHA permissible standard for PCE exposure is 100ppm. The author concludes that exposures to PCE at this company are within current standards, but recommends that exposure be limited as much as possible due to the potential carcinogenicity of the chemical.
