Description:Worker exposure to perchloroethylene (127184) (PCE) was determined at Carnation One-Hour Cleaners (SIC-3633) in the Bronx, New York on August 28, 1979. This company was studied as part of NIOSH industrial hygiene survey of the dry cleaning industry. First aid supplies were provided. Gaskets, seals and leaks were routinely inspected. No respiratory protection was available. Personal air samples were collected in breathing zones of the dry cleaner and presser. Area samples were collected in the dry cleaning area and at the front counter. Peak samples were collected in the dry cleaner and spotter area. During 277 minutes of dry cleaning, the dry cleaner/spotter's and presser's time weighted average (TWA) exposures were 7.0 and 12.0 parts per million (ppm), respectively. Three peak 5 minute samples were 40, 35 and 63 ppm. Dry bulb temperatures ranged from 77.0 to 82.5 degrees F and the relative humidity varied from 70 to 85 percent. The permissible 8-hour OSHA TWA concentration for PCE is 100ppm. The author recommends that PCE exposure be limited, engineering controls for exhaust ventilation be maintained, respiratory protection and protective clothing be worn, employees be informed of hazards of PCE exposure, and that storage containers, equipment, piping, and valves be checked periodically and repaired as needed.
