  A NIOSH industrial hygiene survey was conducted to determine employee exposure to tetraethyl-lead (78002) (TEL), inorganic lead (Pb), ethylene-dibromide (106934) (EDB), ethylene-dichloride (107062) (EDC) and ethyl-chloride (75003) (EC) at Ethyl Corporation (SIC-2869), Pasadena, Texas, from April 7 to 10, 1980. Area and personal air samples were collected for Pb and TEL in all areas of the process. EC was monitored only in the TEL manufacturing area; EDB and EDC were monitored only in the blending area. All the samples were collected for 6 to 8 hours per shift. The TEL samples were collected on a 0.8 micron millipore filter backed up with a resin tube. TEL was desorbed with pentane and analyzed by gas chromatography (GC) with a photoionization detector. The Pb samples were also collected on a 0.8 micron millipore filter. The samples were ashed and analyzed by atomic absorption spectrophotometry. The EDB, EDC, and EC samples were collected on a charcoal tube, desorbed with carbon-disulfide, and analyzed by GC with a flame ionization detector. For TEL, 6 of the 60 personal samples analyzed were above the OSHA standard of 0.075 milligram per cubic meter (mg/m3). The six samples ranged from 0.092 to 0.159mg/m3 TEL. For Pb, the 8 hour time weighted average (TWA) for 6 of the 60 samples was above the OSHA standard of 0.05mg/m3. These samples ranged from 0.057 to OSHA standards. The author concludes that there is no health hazard to employees exposed to EDB, EDC, and EC. However, there is a potential risk for workers exposed to TEL and Pb. The author recommends improving existing ventilation systems and continuing the use of respirators and industrial hygiene and biological monitoring programs. [Description provided by NIOSH]
