Description:Area and process air samples and process water samples were collected by wet air traps and dry solid sorbent traps at the Prime Tannery in Berwick, Maine (SIC-3111). Samples were analyzed for the presence N-nitroso compounds and their precursors, nitrosatable amines and of nitrosating agents. Concentrations were below detectable units except for one sample containing 0.25 micrograms per cubic meter of N-nitrosomorpholine (59892) (NMOR) and another containing 0.05 micrograms per cubic meter of N-nitrosodimethylamine (62759) and 0.12 micrograms per cubic meter of NMOR. The N- nitrosamine concentrations were equivalent to 0.1 to 0.01 of those found in other tanneries. Higher air nitrosation capacity concentrations found in the tannery parking lot were attributed by the authors to truck traffic, and propane (74986) driven fork lifts in the splitting department may have contributed to higher concentrations of nitrous-oxide (10024972) in the air.
