Description:The purpose of this walk through study conducted at Randolph Air Force Base (AFB) during aircraft refueling operations was to determine exposure of personnel to 2-methoxyethanol (109864) (2-ME) and to determine whether the exposed population was suitable for study of potential reproductive health effects resulting from the exposure. 2-ME is a common industrial solvent and is used as a jet fuel additive at Randolph AFB. A total of 30 individuals are directly involved in refueling operations and include 13 refuelers, five truck drivers, and 12 crew chiefs. Aircraft refueling operations were observed during the study and thirteen personal air samples were collected. Of these 13, 11 indicated nondetectable concentrations of 2-ME. Two of the sample results were detectable, ranging from 0.26 to 4.60ppm. Due to the small number of exposed personnel and the low concentrations of 2-ME found, it was decided not to include this base in future studies. [Description provided by NIOSH]
