  Worker exposures to ethylene-oxide (75218) were determined at the Dow Chemical Company (SIC-2869) in Plaquemine, Louisiana, on March 9 and 10, 1978. The survey was part of a NIOSH industry wide study of occupational ethylene-oxide exposure. The company maintained a formal safety and industrial health program, as well as an environmental control department. Approximately 2,000 employees were employed by the company. Personnel records provided demographic information and work histories. Ethylene-oxide personal air samples ranged from nondetectable to 62 parts per million (ppm) for the loading operating technician trainee. The federal air standard for ethylene-oxide was 50ppm, based on an 8 hour time weighted average exposure. The author recommends that the existing control measures at this facility be continued; that respirators be used by tank car loaders and other personnel, and that all employees be instructed of the hazards of toxic process materials.
