Description:Raw materials, equipment, manufacturing methods and work practices were investigated to identify possible health hazards at the Jay Garment Company, Incorporated (SIC-2328) in Clarksville, Tennessee, on October 30, 1974. This company was included in the initial phase of a NIOSH survey of the men's apparel industry. The facility employed 270 workers. No formal medical, industrial hygiene or safety program was provided. A physician provided emergency services to employees. New employees were not required to take pre- employment medical examinations, and periodical examinations were not provided. No formal safety committee was established. Personal protective devices were required in the maintenance shop. The fabric was marked, cut, labeled, and sewn. The materials used were made of polyester and cotton blends. Machines were equipped with needle and belt guards. Guards were not added to drive belts. Plastic shields were provided on bar tacking machines. General ventilation was provided by central air conditioning. A sprinkler system was installed for general fire protection. Noise levels ranged from 72 to 95 decibels on the slow response A scale in the cutting and pocket setting areas, respectively. Light measurements were 50 and 80 foot-candles for the cutting and sewing areas, respectively. Dust concentrations for the underarm and face pocket operations were 0.36 and 0.19 milligrams per cubic meter, respectively. Fibers greater than 27 microns were found in the face pocket area. No workers were wearing protective dust masks. No survey conclusions or recommendations are given. [Description provided by NIOSH]
