  Hazards associated with the men's apparel industry were surveyed on February 18 and 19, 1974, at two factories of Hart Schaffner and Marx (SIC-2311) in Chicago, Illinois. The number of employees was not specified. One facility housed administrative, marking and cutting operations. Workers reported release of organic vapor during ironing of the marker paper, and significant generation of dust during cutting operations. The other facility was used for cutting, sewing, storage and shipping operations. A trichloroethylene solvent was used to dissolve plastic basting threads. Clothes were handled while still wet with solvent, but workers used full face respirators to avoid vapor inhalation. The author recommends that the work process be modified to avoid handling of solvent soaked clothing. Airborne dust should be characterized, and a resin material used to coat some of the fabrics should be identified. [Description provided by NIOSH]
