Description:A walk through survey was conducted at the Bard Urological facility of C.R. Bard, Inc. (SIC-3842), in Murray Hill, New Jersey to assess the feasibility of including this facility in the NIOSH mortality and industrial hygiene study of workers exposed to ethylene-oxide (75218) (ETO). Industrial hygiene records, production processes, and personnel records were evaluated. ETO has been used for sterilization of catheters and other medical equipment since 1963, and industrial hygiene monitoring for ETO extends back to 1976. Personnel records were adequate for nonexempt workers. Based on a study of work histories, the exposed, nonexempt worker group would contribute 24,533 person years to the mortality and industrial hygiene study. None of the other chemicals listed by the company as being or having been used at the facility are known leukemogens. No chemical exposures are considered likely to be potentially confounding for the purposes of the mortality and industrial hygiene study. The authors conclude that the facility meets all of the eligibility requirements of the protocol, and should be included in the study. [Description provided by NIOSH]
