  A walk through survey was conducted at the Fairfax facility of the General Motors Assembly Division (SIC-3711), Kansas City, Kansas to determine the suitability of the site for inclusion in an in depth epidemiological, industrial hygiene, and medical evaluation of health hazards in the painting trades. The facility assembled Buick, Oldsmobile, and Pontiac model automobiles, and paint application methods included electrodipping, stationary electrostatic and conventional spray, and automatic electrostatic and conventional hand spray. A variety of epoxy and acrylic paint types and acrylic lacquered body colors totaling approximately 1.4 million gallons were used in 1979. Workers involved directly in paint operations numbered approximately 600. Specific descriptions of the facility workforce, medical record keeping, industrial hygiene programs, and engineering controls were included in the discussion. The authors recommend that this facility be considered for inclusion in the in depth survey of health hazards in the painting trades but point out that the Fairfax facility is not ideal for an industrial hygiene survey. The authors also conclude that the stability of the workforce makes this facility appropriate for an epidemiological study of automotive original equipment manufacturers.
