  The work operations of the Hudson-Shatz Painting Company (SIC-172) Incorporated at Rockefeller Plaza in New York City were investigated. The survey was conducted to determine if this site would be suitable for inclusion in an in depth epidemiological, industrial hygiene, and medical study of health hazards in the painting trades. Fifteen men are employed at the company which is engaged in small job maintenance painting and touch up work throughout Rockefeller Plaza. Painters apply approximately 3 gallons of paint to designated surfaces each day, and workers assigned to mixing these paints spend between 4 and 5 hours a day on this job. Painters work in usually well ventilated areas but the mixers are in a small shop without central ventilation. Alkyl based paints comprise 80 percent of the paints used, but no personal respiratory protective equipment is used by the workers while they are applied. Employee records and information are maintained by the painting company and the International Brotherhood of Painters and Allied Trades. The authors conclude that even though exposure to the painters is probably low, painting operations in Rockefeller Plaza may be considered for in depth sampling because they appear to be representative of the type of maintenance painting which union members may do as a part of their work.
