• Description:
  Exposure to bischloromethylether (542881) (BCME) at Grace Bleachery (SIC-3552) in Lancaster, South Carolina, was measured on September 10 and 11, 1974. The bleachery employed 1600 persons in the finishing department. Medical personnel included one full time physician and three nurses during the first shift and one nurse each on two other shifts. Physical, audiometric, and spirometric exams were given before employment, after long illnesses, and upon promotion. A monitoring program administered two phase spirometric exams for some workers. There was no industrial hygiene program. The ventilation system was always under negative pressure. The framing process was the area with potential exposure to BCME. All area air samples were below the 0.1 parts per billion (ppb) concentration of BCME possible detection. The authors conclude that no BCME is being produced at the facility. They recommend use of zinc-nitrate (7779886) or other low, ionic chloride containing catalyst and use of low free formaldehyde resins. Sputum cytology exams should be given to anyone working for more than 5 years where ionic chloride catalysts are used. Exhaust vents should be separated from fresh air intake systems. Industrial hygiene measures should include identification of toxic chemicals and provision of worker protection with appropriate wearing apparel, prohibition of eating and smoking in production areas, required showers before leaving work and prohibition against taking clothing home, and sampling of air for BCME wherever formaldehyde resins are used.
