Description:Occupational exposure to organic vapors was determined at the 3M Company (SIC-2821) in Fairmont, Minnesota on June 19 to 20, 1974. Approximately 328 people were employed at the facility. The company had a first aid room, an industrial hygiene coordinator, a safety committee, and an agreement with outside physicians to treat workers. Air and bulk samples were collected to measure the concentrations of various chemicals. Several workers received medical examinations and gave their medical histories. Ethyl- acetate (141786) was found in concentrations greater than 5 percent of the threshold value. All bulk samples contained concentrations less than the minimum detectable level. Local exhausts on the adhesive coating unit, and the height of the exhaust stack leading from the oven room needed redesigning. No organic diseases or symptoms reported in the medical histories were directly linked to toxic chemicals except for the workers exposed to ethyl-acetate in the curing ovens. The authors conclude that no potential hazards existed from organic vapor exposure. They recommend redesigning the ventilation system, a better exhaust system for the adhesive coating unit, the use of respirators when workers clean ovens, having employees shower and change clothes before leaving work, and having workers use impermeable gloves.
