  Worker exposure to perchloroethylene (127184) (PCE) was determined at Broadway Cleaners (SIC-7216) in Redwood City, California on July 26, 1978. The firm was included in an industry wide mortality and industrial hygiene study of dry cleaning workers exposed to PCE. The work force included pressers, a cashier, a bagger, and dry cleaners and spotters. First aid supplies were available on the premises. Personal, area and peak samples were collected. The 8 hour time weighted average (TWA) exposure of the dry cleaner was 29 parts per million (ppm) PCE. Full shift samples indicated concentrations of 26ppm in the dry cleaning area and 8ppm in the pressing and finishing area. The PCE concentration of a 15 minute peak sample during garment transfer was 21ppm. PCE concentrations were well within OSHA standard concentrations for an 8 hour TWA of PCE of 100ppm and the OSHA acceptable ceiling concentration of 200ppm, not to exceed a maximum peak of 300ppm for 5 minutes in any 3 hour period. The author recommends that exposure to PCE be restricted as much as possible because of its potential hazard as a carcinogen. [Description provided by NIOSH]
