  Worker exposures to paints and solvents were surveyed at Hamilton Industries (SIC-2522) in Two Rivers, Wisconsin, on February 6, 1979. The company was under consideration for inclusion in a NIOSH study of health hazards in the painting industry. Approximately 90 to 100 of the employees at the facility were assigned to the painting operations. The company maintained a formal safety and industrial hygiene program. Personnel records provided demographic information and absence reports. Approximately 15,000 gallons of unreduced paints were used by this facility every month. Solvents used in painting operations included methyl-ethyl-ketone (78933), proprietary ethyl-alcohol (64175), butyl-cellosolve (111762), aromatic petroleum solvent, acetone (67641), methyl-alcohol (67561), wood-alcohol (67561), normal butyl-alcohol (71363), and butanol- xylene. Paints used included acrylic and alkyd types. The authors conclude that the facility would not be suitable for an industrial hygiene survey, since a major portion of the work process is scheduled for redesign, however, the workforce could be used in an in-depth epidemiological study.
