  A survey was conducted on February 15, 1979, to determine if the Ford Motor Company Assembly facility (SIC-7535) in Atlanta, Georgia would be suitable for epidemiological, industrial hygiene and medical studies of health hazards in the painting trade. This facility employed about 80 painters on three shifts. Personnel records were maintained, including the employees' job history. Company and death certificates were available for all fatalities occurring in workers and retired employees. An on-site medical department employed three nurses and one full-time physician and records were maintained on occupational and non-occupational illnesses. Pre-employment examinations were given. Industrial hygiene and safety was monitored by a Safety Supervisor. The facility had no industrial hygiene program with personnel performing routine surveys. Hazardous chemical exposure was low. No deficiencies were found in paint spray booths nor were acute health hazards to painters evident. The authors suggest that in-depth studies be conducted. [Description provided by NIOSH]
