Description:Worker exposures to metal fumes, silica (7631869), dust, and noise were determined at Ogden Iron Works (SIC-3322) in Ogden, Utah, on November 13 and December 19, 1968. A personal air sample taken from a brass casting worker revealed copper (7440508), zinc (7440666), and lead (7439921) concentrations of 0.07, 0.72, and 0.29 milligrams per cubic meter (mg/CuM), respectively. Only the lead concentration exceeded the threshold limit value (TLV) of 0.2mg/CuM. Personal air samples for silica dust ranged from 0.1 to 0.3mg/CuM, compared with the TLV of 0.7mg/CuM. Noise measurements ranged from 82 to 102 decibels relative to the A-weighted scale. Other potential hazards included exposures to welding fumes, and spray painting and oil mist. The author recommends improvements in exhaust ventilation systems in the brass casting room, use of respirators when necessary, use of ear protectors, provision of air line respirators for spray painters, and compliance of welding operations to recommendations of the American Welding Society.
