Description:An industrial hygiene survey to determine the extent of exposure to N-nitroso compounds at the fish meal production facility (SIC-2077), Lipman Marine Product, Gloucester, Massachusetts, is reported. The facility produces fish meal, fish-oil, and fish solubles from raw fish. In addition, bait is sold to lobster fishermen. Bulk samples of the whole raw fish and fish meal product were obtained. Six area air samples were also collected. No significant levels of volatile n-nitrosamines were found in the fresh raw fish samples analyzed. In the final fish meal product there were observable amounts of N- nitrosodimethylamine (62759) (NDMA) and other triethanolamine (121448) positive materials. Data from air sampling indicate the presence of significant levels of NDMA at several sites within the factory. [Description provided by NIOSH]
