Description:Exposures to methyl-chloride (74873) during its production and use in producing tetramethyl-lead (75741) were determined at the DuPont Chambers Works Facility in Deepwater, New Jersey, during the week of June 4, 1979. Personal breathing zone samples and area samples were collected for all shifts and were analyzed for methyl-chloride by gas liquid chromatography with a flame ionization detector. Lead (7439921) samples were analyzed by atomic absorption spectroscopy. Eight hour time weighted average methyl-chloride exposures ranged from less than 0.16 to 12.4 parts per million (ppm). Lead was not detectable. Area methyl-chloride samples ranged from 2.3 to 62.5ppm. The author concludes that methyl-chloride concentrations were well below the OSHA standard of 100ppm and that analysis for lead was faulty. [Description provided by NIOSH]
