Description:A walk-through survey was conducted at the General Electric Company, Bridgeport, Connecticut, on July 3, 1974, to become familiar with polyvinyl-chloride (9002862) fabrication (SIC-3479) operations, to estimate vinyl-chloride (75014) exposure levels in such operations, and to estimate exposures to vinyl-chloride of a worker who had possibly died of angiosarcoma of the liver. Industrial hygiene, medical and safety programs, and processes are described. Vinyl- chloride environmental levels found in this plant were low. Breathing zone levels varied from none detected to 4.6ppm. The deceased employee probably had a low level intermittent exposure to vinyl-chloride during the period 1938-1963. Other potential health hazards observed during the survey include: respiratory exposure to talc (8030840) in rubber calendering areas, excessive noise exposure in dicing operations, and heat stress in the mixing area of the wire and cable products department.
