  A preliminary walk-through survey of the Wall Colmonoy Corporation, Detroit, Michigan, on May 3, 1977 was conducted to determine the type and extent of exposures that exist during furnace brazing (SIC- 3398) operations. A history of the plant and a description of the process are given. At the time of survey, no health hazards were observed in the brazing shop other than nuisance dusts. The foundry and welding areas presented potential problems from electric current, hot materials, fumes and gases. General area air samples were collected during the furnace fabricating operations and analyzed for silver (7440224), copper (7440508), zinc (7440666), iron (7439896), and cadmium (7440439). Airborne concentrations of carbon-monoxide (630080) and nitrogen-dioxide (10102440) were also measured. Although the samples for the analyzed trace metals were below current standards, a potential for peak exposures to increased concentrations may exist. A safety and health program for all workers is recommended. [Description provided by NIOSH]
