Description:A walkthrough survey of American Cyanamid Company (SIC-2869, SIC- 2899), Fortier, Louisiana was conducted in March, 1984. The purpose of the survey was to obtain information on the manufacture of acrylamide (79061) and polyacrylamide (9003058) and the potential for exposure. Acrylamide was produced by catalytic hydration of acrylonitrile (107131), transported by pipe, and stored in closed systems. Potential acrylamide exposure could occur from leaks in defective valves, while collecting and analyzing bulk samples for quality control, loading of trucks and rail cars, or from contact with polymers that contained a monomer residue. There were 500 production employees, of which 22 were involved in acrylamide production and 35 in polyacrylamide production. Personnel records of all current and terminated employees were kept on site. All new employees were required to take a physical examination and periodic examinations every 2 years up to age 40, then annually thereafter. The facility had a biological monitoring program to check for possible acrylamide toxicity. Air monitoring for acrylamide was conducted every 6 months. A training program on the hazards of acrylamide exposure was provided. Employees were provided with and required to wear personal protective equipment. The author recommends an indepth industrial hygiene survey of the facility. [Description provided by NIOSH]
