Description:Worker exposures to radiofrequency (RF) radiation were determined at the Wilson Jones Company (SIC-3499), Chicago, Illinois on June 26, 1979. This facility was under consideration for inclusion in a NIOSH study of the health effects of occupational RF radiation exposure. About 35 of the workers at the company were employed in the heat sealing operations that were surveyed. Medical and safety programs were furnished by the company, and industrial hygiene programs were available on a consultation basis. Personnel records provided information on demographic data, employment history, and current job assignment. Two of the five heat sealing presses tested exceeded current electric field strength guidelines of 200 volts per meter. Magnetic field strengths were not measured. The authors conclude that adequate exposure and comparison groups can be identified from company records. The exposure group could be combined with groups from other RF facilities to furnish a larger cohort for studies of RF reproductive effects. They recommend that shields be added to the heat sealing presses to reduce worker RF exposures. [Description provided by NIOSH]
