  The application of products containing acrylates or methacrylates was investigated at the Greenville Printed Wiring Board facility of Digital Equipment Corporation (SIC-3679), Greenville, South Carolina. Multilayer printed wiring boards with as many as ten layers were produced at the facility. Four areas of the facility used acrylates and/or methacrylates: inner layer, outer layer, solder mask, and dry laboratory. The photoresist film and the solder mask film each contained multifunctional acrylates. The mounting materials used in the dry laboratory contained monofunctional methacrylates. Of a work force of 809 employees, 128 had a potential exposure to acrylates/methacrylates on the job. Seven reported cases of dermatitis which may be attributable to contact with acrylates/methacrylates had been noted since 1981. Usually there was no time lost from the job due to these cases, although some did request to be transferred to areas where contact with these chemical agents would no longer occur. The authors conclude that no recommendations for further controls or procedures are necessary based on the findings of this survey. The authors suggest that the existing hot roll laminators be replaced with the newer enclosed cut sheet laminators which will reduce potential exposures to the laminating operators.
