  Exposure to mineral wool fibers was investigated at Pacor, Incorporated (SIC-1742) in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on August 10 and 11, 1977. Air samples were collected and examined for the presence of airborne fibers, particulate matter, and trace metals. Airborne fiber concentrations ranged from 0.01 to 0.185 fibers per cubic centimeters (f/cc). Particulate matter concentration ranged from 0.5 to 5.753 milligrams per cubic meter (mg/CuM) for area samples and 0.412 to 2.353mg/CuM for personal samples. Time weighted average exposures for all personal samples were 0.076f/cc, 2.271mg/CuM, and 0.871mg/CuM for fiber, total and respirable particulates, respectively. All exposures were below OSHA recommended standards. All trace metals were below detection limits. A safety hazard from faulty scaffolding was noted. Recommendations were made to provide guard rails and to continue the use of disposable respirators. [Description provided by NIOSH]
