Survey for n-nitroso compounds at Boston Machine Knife and Grinding Co., Watertown, Massachusetts.

  A visit was made to the Boston Machine Knife and Grinding Company located in Watertown, Massachusetts for the purpose of determining extents of exposure to N-nitroso compounds in the machine shop environment. This small, family owned business reground industrial machine knives. The company employed five persons. The majority of the work was performed on three Gockel longitudinal precision grinding machines. Bulk samples of the undiluted and diluted grinding fluid were analyzed for nitrosamines. N- nitrosodiethanolamine (1116547) was detected in one sample at a concentration of 20 micrograms/milliliter. No detectable concentration of N-nitrosodiethanolamine was found in the diluted fluid. The concentrated grinding fluid contained 2 parts per million N-nitrosodiethanolamine. However, the diluted grinding fluid did not contain detectable nitrosamine levels. The grinding fluid did not splash into the air and there was little chance that nitrosamine would be detected in the atmosphere of the shop. [Description provided by NIOSH]
