  Worker exposure to 1,3-butadiene (106990) was measured at the Denka Chemical Corporation (SIC-2822) in Houston, Texas. Neoprene and tetrahydrophthalic-anhydride were produced at this facility. Workers' full shift exposures to 1,3-butadiene were below the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists Threshold Limit Value of 10 parts per million (ppm) and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration Permissible Exposure Limit of 1000ppm. The arithmetic mean, full shift exposures across all job categories were less than 1.43ppm. Geometric means of the full shift exposures for all job categories were less than 0.32ppm. The highest geometric mean time weighted average exposure of 0.32ppm was recorded for head shift testers in the quality control lab. The highest exposure level recorded was for one of the head shift testers in the quality control lab, at 4.12ppm. A dry end man and a wet end man in the chloroprene monomer area collecting 1,3-butadiene quality control samples received short term 1,3-butadiene exposures of less than 0.14 and 10.9ppm, respectively. The authors recommend that the general dilution ventilation conditions in the quality control lab be reassessed in order to control exposures to the head shift testers conducting analysis on 1,3-butadiene samples. Replacement of the threaded fittings on the bombs with other fittings should be considered, thus reducing any possible releases of 1,3-butadiene when making closed loop connections to obtain quality control samples.
