Description:A walk through survey was made of the Baxter-Travenol Facility (SIC- 3842), Cleveland, Mississippi, to evaluate the facility for inclusion in an ongoing NIOSH mortality and industrial hygiene study of exposure of workers to ethylene-oxide (75218) (EtO) during industrial sterilization processes. The facility manufactures disposable health care products, many of which require sterilization with EtO as part of the process. In 1958, the use of EtO was introduced at this location. Storage cases containing individual products which have been packaged are palletized for sterilization. During this process, pallets of product are placed in an EtO rich environment and treated for specified time periods. After such treatment, the sterilized products are exposed to 8 hours of aeration and spend 72 hours in a quarantine area. There are three shifts of sterilization processes each day, 5 days a week. Automatic venting into the atmosphere through stacks extending through the roof of the factory is utilized. Specific jobs in this facility are subject to limited EtO exposures; however, due to numerous factory renovations, it would be impossible to determine an accurate historical exposure estimate. The authors conclude that the lack of sufficient hard data to identify workers potentially at risk from EtO exposure makes it unwise to include this study in the overall general study. Accurate discrimination between EtO exposed and nonexposed workers could not be done based on job titles used in the personnel records. [Description provided by NIOSH]
