Description:Worker exposures to formaldehyde (50000) were surveyed at the Butler County Mushroom Farm (BCMF) (SIC-0182) underground facilities in West Winfield and in Worthington, Pennsylvania, on January 28, and April 28, 1980. The company was under consideration for inclusion in a NIOSH study of formaldehyde carcinogenesis. There were 900 workers employed, out of which about 600 worked in underground areas. Industrial hygiene programs were limited to federal and state occupational health inspections. For new employees, there were pre-employment physical examinations, and workers had access to voluntary comprehensive screening at the Pittsburgh Diagnostic Clinic. Local physicians were on call for emergencies. There was no nurse on the staff but foremen were trained in first aid. Safety equipment was provided by the company. Personnel files for the last 13 years and worker records from 1942 to 1970 were available. Formaldehyde concentrations in the underground areas ranged from non- detectable to more than 10.0ppm for a sample taken 2 feet from the formaldehyde drum. The formaldehyde applicator was exposed to 2.7ppm. The OSHA standard for formaldehyde is 3 parts per million (ppm). The author recommends that BCMF not be included in the formaldehyde carcinogenesis study since use of the chemical was discontinued after the present survey was completed.
