Walk-through survey report: RF radiation exposures from heat sealers at S.I. Jacobson Manufacturing Company, 1414 South Wabash Avenue, Chicago, Illinois.

  Worker exposures to radiofrequency (RF) radiation were determined at the S. I. Jacobson Manufacturing Company (SIC-3079), Chicago, Illinois on June 27, 1979. This company was under consideration for inclusion in an in depth study of the health effects of occupational RF radiation exposures. The company employed about 135 production workers; 65 people worked in the RF heat sealing operations that were surveyed. No formal medical or industrial hygiene programs existed at the facility. Personnel records provided information on a worker's initial job assignment, medical releases, and salary. Five of nine heat sealing presses exceeded current electric field strength guidelines of 200 volts per meter. Magnetic field strengths were not determined. The authors conclude that appropriate exposure and comparison groups cannot be identified from the company personnel records because of high turnover rates and job rotation; therefore, this facility should not be included in the RF radiation health hazard study. Shields should be added to the heat sealers to reduce employee exposures to RF radiation. [Description provided by NIOSH]
