Description:A survey was conducted at 12 granite fabrication plants (SIC-3281) in Elberton, Georgia, April 23 to May 1, 1974 to evaluate the exposure of workers to respirable samples collected in the 12 facilities were analyzed for free silica (7631869) by the x-ray diffraction method. Although all 12 facilities monitored showed some exposures above the OSHA standard for respirable dust, 10 of the facilities with minor exceptions met the standard. Two of the smaller facilities, one of which was a saw plant, showed 75 percent of the samples collected to be above target samples may be associated with the use of silica sand as an abrasive blasting material.
