Description:A study was conducted at the Davidson Mineral Properties, Inc., Lithonia, Georgia, January 15-17, 1973, to evaluate analytical methods for determining free silica (7631869) in Georgia granite dust. The principal business at this facility is the production of granite gravel (SIC-1423). Samples were collected in a tunnel through which crushed gravel is carried on an endless belt. Samples were analyzed by one of three methods: colorimetric, x-ray diffraction, or infrared. For the analysis of free silica in this specific Georgia granite, any one of the analytical methods is satisfactory, provided the 512 millimeters peak is used for infrared analysis. The colorimetric and infrared methods, however, appear to be preferable for individual samples due to the lower variances. [Description provided by NIOSH]
