In-depth industrial hygiene survey report of Hickory Manufacturing Company, Hickory, North Carolina.

  A survey of the techniques used to control occupational exposures to nonvolatile paint components, paint solvent, lead (7439921), and dioctyl-phthalate (117817) was conducted at the Hickory Manufacturing Company (SIC-2511), Hickory, North Carolina, on December 9 to 11, 1980. The facility relied on ventilation control and exhaust air systems to control the exposures from paint particulates and solvents. There were no scrubbers or similar devices on the exhaust air systems before discharge outdoors. There was an occasional strong odor of solvent vapors in and around the facility. Analysis of area and breathing zone samples showed that the airborne concentrations of all substances were below the OSHA and NIOSH limits. The authors conclude that the contaminant concentrations could be further reduced by spraying paint directly into, instead of out of, the booths. It is recommended that better techniques for the removal and disposal of solvents and paint solids be investigated. [Description provided by NIOSH]
