  Worker exposures to lead (7439921) were surveyed at ESB Battery Company (SIC-3691) in Logansport, Indiana, on June 29, 1979. This facility was under consideration for inclusion in a NIOSH study of the health status of workers exposed to less than 300 micrograms per cubic meter of airborne lead and with blood lead concentrations below 80 micrograms per 100 milliliters. The facility employed 250 workers involved in the manufacture of 12 volt automobile lead and antimony type batteries. Locker and lunch room facilities were being modified at the time of the survey. The laundry facility was located in the manufacturing area. Inadequacies were found in the exhaust ventilation system. Blood lead concentrations were measured weekly by a visiting physician. Airborne lead concentrations often exceeded 300 micrograms per cubic meter, but only two workers had blood concentrations in excess of 80 micrograms per 100 milliliters. The author recommends that this facility not be included in the proposed NIOSH study. [Description provided by NIOSH]
