A lead bioassay interpretation of blood specimens collected at the Seattle Times Publishing Company, Seattle, Washington.

  Worker exposure to lead (7439921) (Pb) was investigated at the Seattle Times Publishing Company (SIC-2711), Seattle, Washington, on May 31, 1966. The medical survey was requested by the Department of Labor and Industries of Washington State. Fourteen blood samples and medical histories were collected from workers. Blood Pb concentrations were analyzed. All samples were in the moderate to high chronic absorption category, ranging from 0.03 to 0.05 milligrams percent. No workers experienced plumbism. The author suggests that the difference in individual absorption rates is a result of eating in contaminated areas. He concludes that the moderate lead absorption found in this facility is common to this industry, but corrective steps would improve health conditions. He recommends medical monitoring and follow-up care or work reassignment when indicated, and measures to control surface contamination and fumes. [Description provided by NIOSH]
