  Industrial hygiene and biomonitoring data were collected during a survey at the Parkway Products Inc. (SIC-3079) facility located in Cincinnati, Ohio, one of the largest users of 4,4'-methylenebis(2- chloroaniline) (101144) (MBOCA). Customized polyurethane products were manufactured for industry at this facility. Urinary concentrations of MBOCA were below the California standard of 100 micrograms/liter, with the exception of two samples taken from MBOCA mixers. The wipe samples taken showed a range of concentrations from 4 to 53 micrograms MBOCA per wipe which were collected near the MBOCA room where the chemical was stored as well as handled. Night shift workers were exposed to higher concentrations, probably indicating that less care was taken during this shift in controlling the hazardous substance. There was no clear cut relationship established between environmental and biomonitoring results in this study, except for the workers in the MBOCA room. Skin contamination appeared to be the most likely route of entry into the body. One worker was observed eating at his work station and others were observed working in short sleeves with no protective coveralls. The author recommends frequent washing down of exposed areas, changing protective workclothes in specified facility locations, prohibition of eating or drinking or smoking in work areas, monthly urine monitoring, and continued education as to the hazards of the job.
