  A walk through survey was conducted at the B. F. Goodrich Company (SIC-2869) in Louisville, Kentucky, on September 20, 1977. The purpose of the survey was to assess possible exposure to acrylonitrile (107131), and to assess the feasibility of including the facility in a retrospective cohort mortality industrial hygiene study. There were about 1260 employees at the factory. Corporate industrial hygienists were employed, and the company had an environmental group. Industrial hygiene measurements were taken on a routine basis for control of vinyl-chloride (75014), styrene (100425), butadiene (106990), and acrylonitrile exposures. There were six full time nurses employed, with one part time physician. Preemployment and annual physical examinations were given. There was a formal safety program. Personal protective equipment was provided to employees as needed, and showers and clothes changing facilities were available. The author concludes that the polymerization area is suitable for more intensive study in relation to acrylonitrile exposures. The exposures analyzed were low. No major process changes have occurred in the process, so historical records can be correlated relatively easily. [Description provided by NIOSH]
