  A walk through survey was conducted at Monsanto (SIC-2869), Texas City, Texas, on March 8, 1978. The purpose of the survey was to assess personnel records and potential exposures within the facility as a guide to its usefulness in a retrospective cohort mortality and industrial hygiene study. The total workforce consisted of 1,650 persons, 1,100 of whom were employed in production areas. A nearby clinic was used for emergencies and one part time physician was located on site. Three full time nurses were employed. Preemployment physicals were required with annual examinations for most employees and semiannual examinations for workers exposed to benzene (71432). There was a formal safety program and facilities for showering and changing clothes. Personnel folders were kept for active and terminated employees. There were no files on deceased personnel prior to 1963. The author concludes that the facility would not be suitable for further study because of a shut down for a period of years, the lack of specific job classifications, and high exposures to acrylonitrile (107131) in some areas.
