  The Sheffield factory of the Primary Metals Division of the Reynolds Aluminum Company (SIC-3334) was evaluated on July 24, 1978, for inclusion in a NIOSH retrospective case control study of worker exposure to particulate polycyclic organic matter. The factory housed a north facility built in 1958 and a south facility built in 1940. The number of employees was not reported. Five nurses on rotating shifts, one full time physician and one half time physician were employed. Preemployment and periodic medical examinations were required. Alumina was converted to aluminum by the Soderberg process. Pot size, physical design and some work processes differed between the north and south facilities. Engineering controls at the north building were more effective than those at the south building, and the north building workers used more protective equipment. The author concludes that this factory is not suitable for inclusion in the NIOSH study, since emission and exposure controls appear to be more effective than those found in the general Soderberg aluminum industry, and are not representative of the industry as a whole.
