Description:A walk through survey was made at the Cincinnati Rubber Manufacturing Company, Norwood, Ohio for the purpose of measuring residual chloroprene (126998) levels in a typical roll building operation using polychloroprene (9010984). There were 71 employees, including 38 involved in production work. The company produced mechanical rubber goods, including conveyor belts, paper mill rolls, molded products, and hoses. The particular process of interest was the press roll building operation. The collected samples indicated that the residues of chloroprene and methyl-ethyl-ketone (78933) were below the limits of detection for all samples. Toluene (108883) was present in all samples with concentrations from 1.22 to 2.28 parts per million. The authors indicate that, since the operation observed was typical of the type of work involving polychloroprene, there may not be a chloroprene exposure problem in this type of activity.
