  A site visit was made to Sensor Technology, Chatsworth, California, to perform a preliminary industrial hygiene survey. This company produced solar panels, optical switches, photo transistors, photodiodes, tape and card reader heads and printer heads, and other mechanical assemblies related to the photo electronic field. Safety meetings were held once a month, and the fire department visited regularly to assist in safety planning. No medical examination was required for employment. Minor accidents have occurred related to acid spills and burns. Protective clothing and glasses were provided by the employer. During the visit it was noted that the ingot slicing machine was not ventilated, allowing some mist to escape. This operation should be fully enclosed to prevent inhalation of silicon (7440213). The authors recommend that consideration be given to ventilation systems to control organic solvent and acid vapors. The use of trichloroethylene (79016) should be replaced by a less toxic solvent. Proper lighting should be offered to reduce eye fatigue. During the final quality testing a Xenon lamp was used to simulate the sun. The possible release of ozone (10028156) and oxides of nitrogen should be controlled through the installation of a proper ventilation system. [Description provided by NIOSH]
