  A visit was made to the R. R. Donnelley Printing Company, Lancaster, Pennsylvania for the purpose of conducting an industrial hygiene survey of the facility including air sampling of ink mists, paper dust and carbon-monoxide (630080) (CO). The facility was constructed in 1972 and has been in continuous use as a web fed letterpress shop printing telephone books. The company employed about 70 pressmen, 100 bindery personnel and 15 plate makers. Ink mist concentrations at control panels ranged from 1.3 to 1.7mg/m3. The airborne exposure to respirable particles of carbon-black (1333864) was less than 0.05mg/m3 and to mineral-oil was less than printing ink mist be continued. Periodic monitoring of the chromic-acid (1333820) plating tank should be done. Paper dust exposures, which they did not exceed current limits, should be lessened through improved ventilation or short term use of respirators. [Description provided by NIOSH]
