  A preliminary industrial hygiene survey was performed at the Fibercast Company (SIC-3079), Sand Springs, Oklahoma to collect data related to the characterization of potential worker exposure to 4,4'- methylene-dianiline (101779) (4,4'-MDA) during the manufacture of fibrous glass epoxy pipe and pipe fittings. Personal air and hand exposure samples were collected on five individuals in different job locations. Of these, two had detectable air exposure to 4,4'-MDA: 8.64 micrograms/cubic meter (microg/m3) for the resin injection operator and 0.69 microg/m3 for the auxiliary resin dispensor operator. m-Phenylenediamine (108452) was present in seven of nine air samples. One worker, the resin injector, had measurable hand contact with 4,4'-MDA. Wipe samples of various surfaces indicated trace concentrations near the premix molding unit and near the lay up work curing oven. The author recommends that the air and dermal contact experienced by the resin injector be better controlled by removing the open, hot hardener containers from the shop floor. All operations where 4,4'-MDA or mixed resin is heated should be exhaust ventilated. [Description provided by NIOSH]
