Description:A walkthrough survey of Hercules Aerospace Division, Hercules, Incorporated (SIC-3079), Clearfield, Utah was conducted in March, 1983. The purpose of the survey was to assess exposure to 4,4'- methylene-dianiline (101779) (MDA) and to determine if the facility should be included in a retrospective cohort mortality study. Environmental and air samples were analyzed for MDA. All air samples contained less than 0.0057 milligrams per cubic meter (mg/m3) MDA. The American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists standard for MDA is 0.8mg/m3. Wipe sample MDA concentrations ranged from 0.0026 to 0.0145 micrograms per square centimeter. The safety program at the facility was marginally developed and enforced only for workers having potential contact with MDA. Respiratory protective equipment was available, but not routinely worn. Ventilation measurements in the resin mixing room showed that several exhaust hoods provided only minimal or no ventilation. The current work force numbered 300 hourly and 450 salaried employees. Onsite historical employment records were maintained for 600 employees. The author concludes that the facility should not be included in the mortality study due to the low exposures and the small number of workers. Recommendations include correcting the deficient exhaust hoods and decontaminating surfaces containing MDA. [Description provided by NIOSH]
