Walk-through survey report of Hobbs Potash Facility, Kerr-McGee Corporation, Carlsbad, New Mexico.

• Description:
  Worker exposure to diesel exhaust emissions was investigated at the Hobbs Potash Facility (SIC-2819), Kerr McGee Corporation in Carlsbad, New Mexico, on February 6, 1980. The corporation was included in a retrospective environmental epidemiology study of potash miners and millers. The facility employed about 410 mine, mill, and office workers. Records on active and terminated workers were maintained. All workers were given a preemployment physical and annual hearing and sight tests. Safety training was given. No industrial hygiene samples were taken other than to evaluate diesel tailpipe exhaust emissions. Spot sampling in an entry face using diesel ram cars for ore hauling revealed carbon-monoxide (630080) nondetectable, carbon-dioxide (124389) at 1100 parts per million, and nitrogen-dioxide (10102440) nondetectable. Ventilation flow rate was 70 to 110 linear feet per minute. The author does not recommend this facility for a followup survey because of its short history of operation and the probable small numbers of deceased workers among a 1964 to 1967 cohort recorded in a NIOSH file.
